The History of the Parish of Kirkburn

The Civil Parish of Kirkburn and is formed by the hamlets of Kelleythorpe, Southburn Eastburn & Kirkburn

At the time of the 2011 census the total population of the parish is 903

Originally Kirkburn was know as Westburn but the name was changed after St. Mary’s church was built circa 1130-1155

The nearest Village is Southburn which from 1890 was served by Southburn Railway Station on the Driffield – Selby line, this closed in 1954

The Largest population in the parish (per hamlet) is Kelleythorpe. Between 2001 & 2011 this was almost entirely responsible for a population increase of 492.

Further increases in the parish population are expected with the proposed redevelopment of the old RAF site at Kelleythorpe (first opened in 1918 by the Royal Air Force under the name of RAF Eastburn)
